DAY 12 – The Gift Day

It’s an early start as authors and volunteers head over to the Gift Day event. Hundreds of readers from all over Brazil are already standing in line, and I just want to start! The adrenaline begins to flow and I can’t wait to meet everyone.
Stu and Gergo are on my table, lucky me, a thorn flanked by two roses.
We’re expecting hugs, and we’re not disappointed. There’s a special Brazilian hug, I think, that’s so tight it’s hard to breathe, but completely heart-felt.
Many readers bring chocolate (I must have mentioned my love of chocolate once or twice), and the lovely Leticia brings me a soft toy dog named Pip because I’d said I was missing her. That has me welling up.
Both Stu and Gergo are showered with gifts, and for Gergo especially, it’s a day full of wonderful moments and surprises as he experiences his first Brazilian book signing.
EXPLOSIVO sells out, but that’s because the printer didn’t send enough books. One of the headaches for the Gift Box team. Along the way, they’ve had cancelled venues, cancelled flights, and an Author who had to pull out just days before the event. They even worked until 4am the night before to iron out the final problems.
The day is long, with signing from 9am to 8pm with two breaks. It’s a test of stamina for volunteers and readers as well as authors. Our two translators Carol Sales and Carol Dias work tirelessly, and we even learn a few Portuguese words and phrases along the way.

O começo é cedo para os autores e voluntários do The Gift Day. Centenas de leitores de todo o Brasil já estão na fila e eu só quero dar início. A adrenalina começa a crescer e eu mal posso esperar para encontrar todo mundo.
Stu e Gergo estão na minha mesa, sorte a minha, um espinho cercado por duas rosas.
Esperávamos por abraços e não ficamos desapontados. Existe um abraço especial brasileiro, eu acho, que é tão apertado que é difícil de respirar, mas que preenche o coração.
Alguns leitores trouxeram chocolate (eu devo ter mencionado meu amor por chocolate algumas vezes), e a amável Letícia me trouxe um cachorro de pelúcia chamado Pip, porque eu disse que estava sentindo falta dela. Isso me deixou bem.
Tanto Stu quando Gergo foram inundados com presentes, e para o Gergo especialmente foi um dia lotado de momentos maravilhosos e surpresas, enquanto ele tem sua primeira experiência em um evento literário no Brasil.
Explosivo esgotou, mas tudo porque a gráfica não mandou livros o suficiente. Apenas uma das dores de cabeça da equipe da The Gift Box. Ao longo do caminho, eles cancelaram locais, voos, e uma autora teve que sair dias antes do evento. Eles trabalharam até as 4h da manhã no dia anterior para solucionar os últimos problemas.
O dia foi longo, com assinaturas das 9h às 20h com duas pausas. Foi um teste de energia para os voluntários e leitores, assim como para os autores. Nossas duas tradutoras, Carol Sales e Carol Vitali, trabalharam incansavelmente, e nós ainda aprendemos algumas palavras e frases em português ao longo do caminho.

No final, estávamos cansados, mas felizes.
And then it’s one final challenge after the event, we sign copies of PARA VOCÊ (For You) for our publisher for another long hour before taking the minibus back to the hotel to pack our cases.
E então, nós tivemos um desafio final depois do evento. Assinamos cópias de Para Você para a nossa editora por outra longa hora, depois a van nos levou de volta ao hotel para fazermos as malas.
DAY 13 THE LAST DAY
Back on the minibus and heading for the airport. We have time to stop for brunch at the beautiful Art Nouveau Confeitaria Colombo. Enormous crystal mirrors and French stained glass windows add to the elegance. Founded in 1894, the cafe is part of the Cultural and Artistic Heritage of Rio de Janeiro. It was a meeting point for artists, politicians and intellectuals – including Olavo Bilac, Rui Barbosa, Villa-Lobos, Chiquinha Gonzaga, among others.
I feel I should order English tea, but I have iced moccachino instead. The cake display is something else, sadly not gluten free, so I can only look.
Last stop before the airport is Real Cabinet Português. Founded May 14, 1837, the Office was created with the intention of offering the resident patricians access to the publications of their country. The Royal Portuguese Reading Office has a collection of 350,000 works by Portuguese authors outside Portugal. It smells of old books and history, and I love it.
And then we have to say goodbye to new friends, leaving behind the sunshine and hugs to head home to rainy England.
I’m ready to see my family again, but we’ve all had an amazing experience on our #brazilliant adventures ❤️🇧🇷

DÉCIMO TERCEIRO DIA
De volta para a van e a caminho do aeroporto. Tivemos tempo de parar para um brunch na bela Confeitaria Colombo com arquitetura em Art Nouveau. Espelhos de cristal enormes e vitrais franceses contribuem para a elegância. Fundada em 1894, o café é parte da cultura e herança artística do Rio de Janeiro. Foi ponto de encontro para artistas, políticos e intelectuais – incluindo Olavo Bilac, Rui Barbosa, Villa-Lobos, Chiquinha Gonzaga e outros.
Senti que poderia pedir um chá inglês, mas quis um mocaccino gelado no lugar. Os bolos expostos eram uma coisa a parte, mas infelizmente tinham glúten, então eu só pude olhar.
A última pausa antes do aeroporto era o Real Gabinete Português. Fundado em 14 de maio de 1837, o escritório foi criado com a intenção de oferecer aos aristocratas residentes acesso às publicações do país deles. O Real Gabinete Português tem uma coleção de 350 mil obras em português com autores de fora de Portugal. Cheira a livros antigos e história, e eu amei.
E então nós tivemos que dizer adeus a novos amigos, deixando para trás o sol e os abraços para voltar para a chuvosa Inglaterra.
